History of Palmetto, Florida

  • 1868 marks the arrival of Samuel Sparks Lamb, widely honored as the “Father of Palmetto.” Hailing from South Carolina, he named the settlement after his home state—the “Palmetto State.” Lamb acquired and platted land, donated parcels for community staples such as churches, a cemetery, a library, a women’s club, and public parkland. The Railway Era
  • The arrival of the railroad in 1902 shifted Palmetto’s commercial hub from the riverfront to the area near the Seaboard Air Line depot. This development enabled the use of brick for construction, resulting in sturdier architecture replacing older wooden structures. By 1921, the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad had also established a branch route connecting Tampa to Palmetto and “Bradentown.”
  • The 1930s and beyond saw a mix of industrial and residential developments, including dolomite mining operations on the riverfront (1950s–1974), followed later by redevelopment of that site into Riviera Dunes, a marina-front residential community completed in 1998. Local Industry
  • Palmetto Canning, founded in 1927, is a notable local business producing jams, jellies, and sauces. After Capt. John Greenlaw’s passing in 1935, his wife Minnie steered the company through the Great Depression, and today it remains in operation under the fifth generation of the Greenlaw family.
