Oldsmar, Florida, was founded in 1916 by automobile pioneer Ransom E. Olds. Does that name sound familiar? Do you remember Oldsmobile cars? Mr. Olds purchased approximately 37,541 acres at the northern tip of Tampa Bay to create a planned community named “R. E. Olds-on-the-Bay,” later shortened to Oldsmar. Mr. Olds envisioned a thriving city featuring residential neighborhoods, businesses, and agricultural enterprises. Early developments included the construction of the Wayside Inn in 1917, along with essential infrastructure such as a post office, general store, and bank. Despite these efforts, growth was hindered by challenges like the devastating 1921 hurricane, which caused significant flooding and damage. Subsequent infrastructure projects, including the opening of the Gandy Bridge in 1924 and the Ben T. Davis Causeway in 1934, diverted traffic away from Oldsmar, further impeding its expansion. In 1927, the town was briefly renamed Tampa Shores in an attempt to revitalize its image but reverted to Oldsmar in 1937. Despite these early setbacks, Oldsmar experienced steady growth in the latter half of the 20th century, evolving into a vibrant community that balances residential living with economic development. Although Oldsmar was again significantly damaged by Hurricane Helene in September 2024, the Oldsmar business community is proving to be very resilient and prospects look good for future growth.
