Clearwater’s history began in 1888 with the arrival of the Orange Belt Railroad and its original name, Clear Water Harbor; the city was officially incorporated in 1891 and again as a city in 1915, becoming the county seat of Pinellas County. In recent decades, strategic downtown revitalization—most notably the $84 million renovation of Coachman Park—alongside cultural institutions and expanded tourism infrastructure have fueled the city’s ongoing growth. Today, inland Clearwater blends historic character, civic progress, and regional tourism, serving over 14 million annual visitors to the broader Pinellas County area. St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) (which is located in unincorporated Pinellas County with a Clearwater address) is experiencing rapid growth and has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States. It recently reached a record 2.49 million passengers in 2023. In February 2025, PIE welcomed 194,876 passengers — its busiest February ever.
