About Clearwater Beach
Clearwater Beach’s story began on January 14, 1897, when Ernest Tate purchased 164 acres of undeveloped barrier island known as “Clearwater Beach Island” for just $200. Initially dubbed Tate’s Island, the barrier island remained quiet until the early 20th century when a wooden bridge built in 1916 connected it to downtown Clearwater, opening the door for tourism and community development Clearwater. By the 1920s, developers aimed to transform the area into the “Newport of Florida,” complete with attractions like the Joyland Pavilion. Over the decades, Clearwater Beach grew steadily, its population supported by improvements such as the 1927 causeway replacement and later enhancements like Beach Walk and pier amenities. The establishment of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in 1972 added educational and conservation appeal, notably boosting recognition with Winter the dolphin’s Olympic-like comeback in Dolphin Tale. Today, Clearwater Beach spans about 2½ miles along the Gulf, celebrated for its powder‑white quartz sands—described as the whitest in the United States.
